Induction Definition and Objective

It is a well documented fact that teacher quality is one of the strongest determinants of student success. As a regulator of the teaching profession, it is our vision that only the best teachers that have gone through rigorous teacher preparation process and a comprehensive continuous professional development programme are given full registration to teach in Fiji. FTRA has been working with all teacher training institutions to ensure the teacher graduate outcomes encompass the 10 Professional Standards for Teachers in Fiji.

It is mandatory for all new teachers to undergo an induction programme before they can be registered to teach in Fiji. The FTRA with assistance from all the Teacher Training Institutions has been since 2015 organising and conducting these induction programmes for all new teachers who graduate from any of the six teacher training institutions in Fiji. For ease of access, these programmes are organised at each teacher training institution for all trainee teachers who are in the final year of a teacher preparation programme. Induction provides a bridge between the teacher training institution and schools in Fiji. New teachers who graduate from different institutions with varying amount of emphasis on different aspects of teaching need to be provided support and guidance for them to perform to the best of their ability. Having access to right information allows them to prepare well for their first year of teaching. Many trainee teachers who have attended induction programmes have reported that Induction provides them with a lot of critical information on aspects related to teaching that they had not contemplated about during their training. This ultimately assists them to prepare well and perform well in schools. The induction programme introduces all prospective teachers to:
