
About the FTRA
The Fiji Teachers Registration Authority (FTRA) is a 100% Fiji Government owned Statutory Body mandated to regulate the teaching profession in Fiji.
It is governed by a Board composed of members representing a cross-section of the teaching industry. The Board is appointed by the Honourable Minister for Education and is responsible for strategic policymaking and providing guidance to the Authority.
The FTRA Secretariat is led by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), who oversees operations and resource management, and serves as the primary link between the Board and the Ministry of Education. FTRA is supported by 14 full-time staff.

Legislative Documentation


Through the FTRA Act 2008, the Authority is also responsible for actively promoting the teaching profession in Fiji.
Mandatory Functions
Register qualified teachers for Kindergarten, Primary, and Secondary schools
Register qualified educators, teacher administrators, and teacher training institutions
Authorise practicum placements for teacher trainees
Register researchers, volunteers, and volunteer agencies working with schools
Work with stakeholders to ensure the quality and relevance of teacher education courses
Conduct teacher induction and student orientation programmes
Regulatory Role
FTRA sets standards and benchmarks for teacher registration by determining:
Required qualifications, training, and expertise
Essential attributes, knowledge and skills
Expected professional conduct and adherence to a code of ethics
Requirements for ongoing professional development
These standards guide registration, renewal processes, and contribute to a more professional and dynamic teaching workforce.
